When Starting out as a Life Coach skip the script

What if I told you the worst thing you could do when starting out as a life coach was write out your elevator pitch?

I know it sounds crazy but when starting out as a life coach, there are bigger fish to grill . From our websites to guest blogging to finding clients and everything else in between, starting a business can be so overwhelming that we easily forget to focus on the single most important step in building our business: talking to people.

While this is the first, most obvious step when starting a coaching business, it is also the scariest (and thus the easiest to procrastinate!) What do you say? How do you get them to want to work with you? What if you mess it up?

Breathe, girl. You’ve got this.

I know there is a lot of advice out there on how to form your elevator pitch: some business coaches give us a plug in formula while others guide us through creating a cute little taglines that might as well be topped with cherries. However, when just starting out as life coach, these well-intended exercises often just confuse us more (or worse, come out as dry, robot responses!)

That’s why, after months of avoiding day to day conversations about what I do, I decided to ditch the elevator pitch and talk from my heart instead of my mind.

Here are 3 of my tips for intuitive elevator pitching when starting out as a life coach

(in Mentor Masterclass you’ll also get Celebrity Mentor Cora Poage’s diamond insight on intuitive elevator pitching as well!)

1. Be bold. Tell every single person who asks you’re a coach. Note the times you want to shrink back and answer differently – but don’t do it! You have to recognize your own power before potential clients will see it.

2. Get vulnerable. As a coach, you need to get really raw on a regular basis. People are more inclined to trust you when you open up to them first. Share your most difficult challenge and how you help other people rise above similar situations. You don’t have to be perfect, just present.

3. Change it up. Approach many different types of people and more importantly, don’t get stuck in the habit of giving everyone the same spiel. Play with different words and phrasing. Note anything that you really like the sound of; or even better, that sends shivers up your spine.

And lastly, stop worrying. Things will happen when they happen. You are exactly where you are meant to me.
