Jo-Ná’s life in empowerment began 15 years ago as background vocalist for independent artists and it took a fortuitous turn when she was not credited or compensated for her work. As a result, she committed her life to educating and protecting artists through her work as a manager, event producer and now a lawyer and coach on business, brand and marketing for musicians and artists. “Danielle LaPorte says “Having Jo-Ná, on our crew gives us the assurance to make bold-but-steady moves for our business growth! She founded J.A. Williams Law P.C. – The Artist Empowerment Firm in 2011 to provide artists and with ways to successfully navigate their careers in the entertainment industry and provide assistance with entertainment, business and intellectual property matters. She is dedicated to issues regarding the rights of artists because she believes they are a population highly vulnerable to exploitation without proper knowledge. She founded Artist Empowerment International in 2012 to advise musicians on business, branding and marketing. Some of her artists have topped been nominated for Grammys, U.K. Soul and Pop Charts, Amazon and ITunes Top Soul Album Charts and received local and International acclaim. Célia Faussart of the Grammy nominated group, Les Nubians says, “I felt she [Jo-Ná] really understood my issues and all the legal issues surrounding them. She’s been featured in The Vocalist Magazine, Women In Music, Cyber PR, Harlem Trends, Sonic Eclectic and Artist’s First Radio. She also was named “Alumni Innovator” by Suffolk University’s Institute of Law Practice Technology and Innovation. She has written several articles in entertainment publications including the ReverbNation, CD Baby, Women In Music, Artistpreneurs.com, ABA’s intellectual property magazine, Landslide and The New York State Bar Association’s, Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Journal. She was also one of editors of the American Bar Association’s Annual Review of Intellectual Property Law Developments, 1st edition. She has previously conducted webinars on legal business structures, trademark law, and artist branding for Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts in Massachusetts. She is licensed to practice law in New York.
